Garage Door Painters in Windsor

Windsor Decorators paint garage doors across Windsor and the Royal Borough — timber, metal, GRP composite, and uPVC.
- Timber garage doors stripped, primed, and repainted to last
- Metal and steel doors: rust treatment, priming, and durable finish
- GRP composite doors: specialist adhesion primer before topcoat
- uPVC garage doors: plastic primer system, matched or updated colour
- Colour matching available to coordinate with the house exterior
Windsor town and Eton have Georgian and Victorian properties with traditional timber garage doors — many in conservation areas where finish quality is visible to the street. Further out, Dedworth and the new-build estates have a high proportion of GRP composite and uPVC garage doors that respond well to a colour update with the right primer system.

Timber Garage Doors
Timber garage doors on period properties in Windsor and Eton carry the same preparation demands as any other external joinery. Side-hinged and up-and-over timber doors are stripped back to sound timber, filled at any cracks or grain splits, and primed with an oil-based or specialist exterior timber primer before finish coats are applied.
Old paint build-up on doors in Georgian and Victorian properties can run to many layers — painting over without stripping produces a finish that replicates the same failure points season after season. Two coats of exterior gloss or satin finish are standard, holding for five to eight years when preparation is done correctly.
Metal and Steel Doors
Metal garage doors fail through rust, and rust that is not treated at the painting stage will bleed through any finish coat applied over it. We wire-brush loose scale, apply rust converter to active corrosion, and prime with a rust-inhibiting metal primer before any topcoat.
The primer is the structural element of a metal door finish, not the topcoat. We apply a durable exterior metal finish in the chosen colour once the primer system has cured, addressing the corrosion rather than concealing it.
GRP and Composite Doors
GRP (glass reinforced plastic) is the material in the majority of modern composite garage doors across Sunningdale, Ascot, and Virginia Water properties. It is non-porous and smooth — standard primers applied directly to GRP will not bond correctly and the finish peels within months.
We use specialist adhesion primers designed for composite substrates, which create the key the finish coat needs. Colour choices are extensive: any exterior finish colour can be applied once the adhesion primer is in place.
uPVC Doors
uPVC garage doors can be painted with good durability when the correct primer is used. Standard primers will not adhere to the smooth uPVC surface and will lift within a season. We use specialist plastic primer systems that create the adhesion layer for the finish coat.
A properly primed and painted uPVC garage door holds its finish for five to eight years. Colour changes are popular on Windsor properties — particularly updating white or brown uPVC to anthracite grey or black to coordinate with updated front doors or window frames.

Combining Garage Doors with an Exterior Repaint

One Mobilisation, One Consistent Finish
Garage doors are often done as part of a wider exterior repaint. Working on both at the same time means a single mobilisation and a consistent finish across the whole front elevation.
See our exterior painting page for full details on exterior repaints across Windsor and the Royal Borough.
Exterior Timber Joinery
Fascias, soffits, window frames, and other external joinery can be painted at the same time as the garage door for a coordinated result. For other exterior timber joinery, see our wood painting page.
Conservation Areas
Windsor’s conservation area covers much of the town centre and parts of Eton, where changes to a front elevation — including garage door colour — can require prior approval. We flag this at the quotation stage for properties in or near conservation areas.
In most cases, repainting in a sympathetic colour similar to the existing does not require permission. A significant colour change may need informal confirmation with the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead before proceeding.
How Garage Door Painting Works
1. Assessment
We check the door material, existing coating condition, and note any rust, rot, peeling, or adhesion failure before quoting.
2. Surface Preparation
Timber is sanded back to sound wood. Metal is wire-brushed and any rust treated. GRP and uPVC surfaces are cleaned and degreased. No new product goes on over a compromised surface.
3. Priming
Bare timber gets an oil-based or specialist timber primer. Metal gets a rust-inhibiting metal primer. GRP and uPVC get specialist adhesion primers designed for non-porous surfaces.
4. Finish Coats
Two finish coats are standard. Exterior gloss or satin for timber and metal. Specialist flexible topcoats for GRP and uPVC where required. Colour matching is available on request.
5. Final Check
We check coverage on all faces — including edges and the inside face if accessible — before leaving. Any touch-ups are completed on the day.

Garage Door Painting Costs in Windsor
Prices vary with door size, material, and the condition of the existing coating. We provide a fixed price after assessing the door.
Typical Price Range
Typical range: £180 to £450. Doors in poor condition — heavy rust, peeling in multiple layers, or significant wood rot — require more preparation time and fall toward the higher end.
Call 01753 981166 to arrange a site visit and fixed quote.
Price by Door Type
- Timber up-and-over or side-hinged door (sound condition): £180–280
- Metal or steel door with rust treatment needed: £220–350
- GRP or composite door: £200–320
- uPVC door: £180–280
- Double garage door (any material): add 50–80% to the above
What Affects the Price
Door size, material type, and the condition of the existing coating all affect the final price. A door with multiple layers of peeling paint or active corrosion needs more preparation than one in sound condition.
We assess every door individually and provide a fixed price before any work starts — no surprises on completion.
