Ceiling Painting Services

Smooth Ceiling Painting

A smooth, even ceiling finish depends almost entirely on preparation. Any cracks, holes, or surface irregularities show clearly once a fresh coat of white paint is applied. Your decorator fills and sand all defects before starting.

Your decorator uses a deep-pile roller for open ceiling areas to achieve a consistent texture. Two finish coats are standard. Ceiling work is done before walls in any room.

Artex Removal and Overskimming

Textured Artex ceilings were common in homes built between the 1960s and 1990s. Many properties in Maidenhead, Wraysbury, and Datchet have them. We always recommend a test before any removal work begins.

Overskimming is the most cost-effective route to a smooth ceiling. A plasterer applies a thin skim coat directly over the textured surface. The result is indistinguishable from a purpose-built smooth ceiling.

Cornicing and Roses

Original cornicing and ceiling roses are among the most distinctive features of period properties in Windsor town, Eton, and Old Windsor. Cutting in by brush along the full length of a cornice produces a clean colour break.

Ceiling roses are often built up with many layers of old paint. In some cases, cleaning back to the original profile before repainting makes a significant difference to the final result.

Water Damage and Staining

Brown water stains on ceilings are caused by leaks from above. Painting directly over a stain without treating the cause and sealing the surface is the most common mistake. The stain bleeds through within weeks.

Your decorator uses a specialist stain-blocking primer on all water-damaged areas before any finish coat. If the plaster is soft or blown, it needs to be cut out and replastered before painting.

High Ceilings

Georgian and Victorian properties across Windsor town, Sheet Street, and the conservation area often have ceilings at three metres or above. Your decorator uses scaffold boards or hop-up platforms, never ladders alone for extended overhead work.

High ceilings mean more surface area and more time on cornicing and roses. See our hallway painting page for more on tall stairwell ceilings.

What Drives the Price

Ceiling painting in Windsor typically costs between £150 and £550 per room, depending on ceiling height, surface condition, and the presence of period features.

Ceiling height and features. Standard-height ceilings in modern homes cost less than high ceilings in period properties. Cornicing, ceiling roses, and coving all require brush cutting.

Surface and Artex

Surface condition. New plaster or repaired areas need a sealing coat before painting. Water-damaged areas need stain-blocking treatment. These preparation steps add to the overall cost.

Artex or textured surfaces. Overskimming a textured ceiling before painting adds to the cost but produces a lasting smooth finish.

Standard Ranges

Standard bedroom or reception ceiling, modern property in Wraysbury or Datchet: £150 to £250, two coats, good existing condition.

Ceiling with original coving, Edwardian semi in Sunningdale or Ascot: £250 to £380, including cornice cut-in and preparation.

Period Property Ranges

High ceiling with original rose and cornice, Georgian townhouse Windsor town: £280 to £480, full preparation and detailed brush work on period features.

Properties in the Windsor Castle conservation area and surrounding streets often have the most complex ceilings in terms of period features and ceiling height.
